Armfield C15 Wind Tunnel

The C15-10 is a computer controlled compact wind tunnel designed for benchtop operation. Air is drawn through the working section by a variable speed fan at the discharge end of the tunnel providing up to 34m/s air velocity. A honeycomb flow straightener is incorporated at the inlet, and a 9:4:1 contraction ratio which ensures an uniform airflow through the working section. The working section is fabricated from clear acrylic to provide optimum visibility of the models, and appropriate model connection points are included in the side wall and roof of the working section to provide ease of use. The wind tunnel is supplied as standard with an in-depth software interface providing control of the fan speed and additionally display important parameters such as static pressure and air velocity. The Armfield C15-10 can be optionally supplied with two variants of manometry banks, a 13 tube water manometer used to simultaneously display differential pressure or a sixteen channel electronic manometer allowing direct integration into the supplied software. The wind tunnel can be supplied with a range of optional accessories including drag bodies, lift bodies, pressure distribution, boundary layers studies and measuring instruments. The optional models are mounted through a circular hatch using quick release clamps (120mm diameter). The placement of the optional models has been designed to minimise the disturbance to air flow and reduction in flow rate, whilst incorporating an angular scale allowing the model to be manually rotated to known angles. The working section incorporates an innovative technique for flow visualisation around any of the optional models avoiding the need for either smoke or dry ice. A lightweight twine follows the flow contour around the model and shows if and where boundary layer separation (breakaway) occurs.

Armfield C16 Hydrogen Bubble Flow Video

Armfield C16 Hydrogen Bubble Flow Visualisation System The Armfield Hydrogen Bubble Flow Visualisation System has been designed to enable viewing of the complex flow patterns associated with water flowing past solid objects or boundaries. The hydrogen bubble technique is highly visual and is particularly useful for laboratory and lecture theatre work. A stream of small hydrogen bubbles accurately follows the water and clearly shows any changes in the direction of the water as it flows around objects in its path. The new C16 includes a smaller electronic control console that incorporates improved digital controls and a low-voltage LED lighting module. This enables improved illumination of the bubbles for clearer demonstrations.

F1-15 Manometer Board Bernoulli’s Theorem Demonstration

Bernoulli's Theorem Demonstration This accessory demonstrates the application of Bernoulli’s Theorem and circumstances where it does not apply. The test section consists of a classical Venturi machined in clear acrylic. A series of wall tappings enable measurement of the static pressure distribution along the converging and diverging duct. A total head tube is provided to traverse along the centre line of the test section. These tappings are connected to a manometer bank incorporating a manifold with an air bleed valve. Pressurisation of the manometers is facilitated by a hand pump. The test section is arranged so that the characteristics of flow through both a converging and diverging section can be studied. Water is fed through a hose connector and is controlled by a flow regulator valve at the outlet of the test section. The Venturi can be demonstrated as a means of flow measurement and the discharge coefficient can be determined.

This accessory illustrates those circumstances to which Bernoulli’s Theorem may be applied. Also, separately, why in other circumstances the theorem gives an inadequate description of the fluid behaviour.

F1-21-MKII Flow Meter Demonstration

The equipment consists of a Venturi meter, variable area meter and orifice plate, installed in a series configuration to permit direct comparison. A flow control valve permits variation of the flow rate through the circuit. Pressure tappings are incorporated so that the head loss characteristics of each flow meter may be measured. These tappings are connected to an eight-tube manometer bank incorporating a manifold with an air bleed valve. Optional Pitot Static Tube Optional Flow Nozzle

F1-38 Hele Shaw Apparatus

The F1-38 Hele-Shaw Apparatus provides a very visual means of showing potential flow in the field of fluid dynamics. The water flows through a very narrow channel which is formed between two plates causing the water to flow in a special way. The mean velocity of the water along the channel obeys equations as those for local velocity in potential flow. The water flow within the channel is designed to be in a steady, laminar state.
